Oil Near Bonds
Oil or conditioner of any kind near a keratin bond will cause slippage. Keep away from bonds.
350°
Max heat (F)
Keep all hot tools below 350°F. Never apply heat directly on a bond. Always use a heat protector.
How to WashYour Extensions
Washing is where most K-Tip clients make their biggest mistakes. The wrong temperature, the wrong product, or conditioner too close to the bond can undo weeks of perfect care. Here's exactly how to do it right.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN — NON-NEGOTIABLE
Always detangle with a soft-bristle or loop brush from ends to roots before wetting your hair. Wet, tangled K-Tip hair will mat at the bond and is very difficult and expensive to correct afterward.
Frequency — 2 times per week maximum
K-Tip bonds are not designed for daily wetting and drying. Every wash cycle introduces moisture to the bond. Overwashing weakens the keratin polymer's grip on your natural hair over time. Use a bond safe dry shampoo at the roots only between washes.
Water temperature — lukewarm to cool only
Hot water softens the keratin bond the same mechanism your stylist uses to remove bonds. It won't destroy them in one wash, but repeated hot water exposure shortens their lifespan significantly. End every wash with a cool water rinse. It closes the cuticle and adds genuine shine.
Shampoo — dilute, scalp only, downward strokes
Mix a small amount of sulfate free shampoo with water in your palm before applying. Work only at the scalp in smooth downward strokes — never circular scrubbing at the bond line. The extension hair cleanses as the shampoo rinses through it naturally.
Rinse longer than you think you need to
Shampoo residue near bonds creates buildup that weakens the keratin polymer over time. Rinse with cool water until the water runs completely clear.
Conditioner — 2 to 3 inches below bonds, always
Apply conditioner from mid shaft to ends only. NOT ON THE BONDS. The oils and slip agents in conditioner will migrate upward toward the bond if applied too close. Use a wide-tooth shower comb to distribute. Leave 2–3 minutes. Rinse completely with cool water.
Dry completely before sleeping — no exceptions
Wet K-Tip hair mats at the bond during the hours of movement in sleep. This creates tangles that start at the bond and work downward difficult, time-consuming, and potentially costly to resolve. This is the most important rule in this guide.
ALWAYS DO
Detangle before wetting every single time
Use sulfate-free, oil-free shampoo
Wash in downward strokes only
Keep conditioner 2–3" below bonds
Rinse with cool water thoroughly
Dry bonds completely before bed
Use bond safe dry shampoo between washes
NEVER DO
Wash with hot water
Use sulfate or oil-based shampoo
Scrub scalp in circular motions
Apply conditioner near bonds
Go to bed with wet or damp hair
Rub hair with a towel to dry
Flip hair upside down while washing
Daily Care & Brushing
What you do between washes how you brush, how you style, and what you apply determines how long your extensions look and feel like they were just installed.
Brushing — minimum twice daily
Use a loop brush or soft bristle extension paddle brush. Start at the ends and work up in sections. Hold the hair mid-shaft — not at the root when detangling near the bonds to protect the attachment point. Pay extra attention to the nape of the neck this area sees the most friction from clothing and movement and tangles fastest.
Heat styling — yes, with care
Your K-Tip hair is 100% Remy human hair and can absolutely be heat styled. Keep all tools below 350°F / 180°C. Never clamp a flat iron or press a curling iron directly on a bond. Leave at least half an inch of clearance below the attachment point. Always use a heat protectant spray before styling.
Oils and products — placement is everything
A light hair oil applied to the ends is wonderful for K-Tip extension hair. The extension hair can't receive moisture from your scalp the way natural hair does it relies entirely on what you apply. But any oil near a keratin bond will cause slippage. Apply all oils mid-shaft to ends only. Distribute through your palms first, never pump directly near the scalp.
IMPORTANT NOTE
The lower back of head is the highest-friction zone. Extensions here tangle faster than anywhere else. Two minutes of extra attention here morning and evening keeps this area smooth and your bonds under zero stress.

How to Sleep with Extensions
Most extension damage happens overnight. A three minute bedtime routine protects your investment through every night.
Verify completely dry
Run fingers through to the bonds. Any coolness or dampness blow dry on low until fully dry. Non-negotiable.
Apply leave-in to ends
A small amount of Mane Ivy Leave-In Elixir mid-length to ends. Overnight absorption makes a visible difference.
Brush thoroughly
Ends to roots, completely. Never braid tangled hair you'll lock the knot in overnight.
Loose low braid
One or two loose braids secured with a silk scrunchie. Loose is the key tight braids create tension on the bond line.
Silk pillowcase / Bonnet
Silk eliminates friction that weakens bonds and causes frizz. It's maintenance equipment, not a luxury.
Morning: finger detangle first
Release the braid and finger-detangle before brushing. Extensions should feel fresh and release easily.
• THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE IN THIS ENTIRE GUIDE •
Never go to sleep with wet or damp hair. Wet K-Tip hair mats at the bond during 6–9 hours of movement in sleep. The tangles that result start at the bond and work downward they are difficult, time consuming, and potentially very costly to resolve safely. Plan your wash days so there is always enough time to dry completely before bed.
Your Maintenance
Schedule
Understanding what's normal at each stage removes the anxiety of wondering whether something is wrong and helps you protect your investment from day one.
DAYS 1–3 Installation settling in
Some tenderness at the bonds is normal. Avoid washing for 48 hours. No steam, saunas, or tight updos while bonds fully set. Call us if you experience sharp or concentrated pain at any bond.
WEEKS 1–2 More hair in your brush this is normal
Your natural hair sheds 50–100 strands per day regardless. With extensions, that shedding collects at the bonds rather than falling away. What you're seeing in your brush is accumulated daily shedding not damage, not breakage, not hair loss from the extensions.
WEEKLY Bond check at home
Run your fingertips lightly across your bonds once a week. Any that feel loose, lifted, or have migrated down call us. A quick touch-up appointment is always better than waiting until your next scheduled visit.
3–4 MONTHS In-Salon Maintenance appointment
We gently remove each bond, reposition the extension higher on the grown-out shaft, and re-bond. Well-maintained K-Tip hair is often reusable through multiple maintenance cycles. Duration: 1–3 hours depending on your set size.
6–12+ MONTHS Extension hair lifespan
With good home care, extension hair lasts 6–12 months across multiple reinstall cycles. Your stylist will assess the hair at every maintenance appointment and advise honestly on whether it's worth reinstalling or time for fresh hair.
Your Active Lifestyle
K-Tip bonds hold better in active environments than tape-in — but they still require a protocol. Here's how to handle every scenario honestly.
PERFECTLY FINE: Gym & Fitness
Wear a loose low bun or braid. Avoid tight high ponytails tension plus sweat stresses bonds. Rinse with fresh water after heavy sweat sessions and dry the bond area thoroughly.
WITH CARE: Hot Yoga & Bikram
Sustained extreme heat and heavy perspiration gradually softens keratin bonds. Braid tightly before class, rinse and dry immediately after. Expect maintenance intervals to shorten. Tell us you practice hot yoga we factor it into your plan.
PREP REQUIRED: Swimming
Pre-soak in fresh water, apply Mane Ivy Leave-In to lengths, braid tightly. Rinse immediately after with fresh water and shampoo. Chlorine and salt build up on bonds never skip the post-swim rinse. K-Tip holds better than tape-in in water.
EXTRA AFTERCARE: Surfing & Ocean
As swimming plus a UV-protectant spray before paddling out. Salt and UV shortens extension hair lifespan even when bonds hold. Plan for more frequent maintenance if you surf regularly.
GO FOR IT: Beach & Sun
Apply UV-protectant hair mist before sun exposure. Keep hair braided when possible. Follow swim protocol if you go in the water. Avoid loose wet hair in ocean wind.
